Latvian is a member of the Indo-European family, Balto-Slavic group. It is the official language in Latvia (up to 1.5 million speakers, including Latvian community abroad).
Generally, two types of Latvian language translation exist - written and oral, which is also known as Interpretation.
The written Latvian language translation could be either a certified Latvian translation or a Standard Latvian translation. Certified translation is normally used when dealing with Authorities, Standard translation is the most common and inexpensive.
Latvian Language interpretation is an oral translation. It can be either simultaneous - when the interpreter renders the message in the target-language as quickly as possible, while the source-language speaker continually speaks; or consecutive - the interpreter speaks, after the source-language speaker has finished speaking.

During Soviet occupation, Latvian was a native language for only 60% of the country's population. In 1990, Latvia introduced language laws to protect Latvian from extinction.
